#217 Mechanical Morning

The mechanical man stood
Slightly bent over
His once shiny features
Painted on by an artist a century ago
The wide open blue eyes
The painted on smile & rosy cheeks
The rusty key sticking out of his back
Right in the middle of his blue vest

He stood in his blue and white striped pants
Waiting
Very still

The morning light starts to break the darkness
Far away a bird wakes up
Singing briefly to the new day
And a petite hand reaches out
Grasping the key
Turning it until it stops
Releasing it
The mechanical man comes to life

Standing straight
He marches for the door
Calling out, "Wake up!"
And singing

"The cows they need their milking
Waiting oh so patient in the dairy
Their udders full to bursting with their gift!"

He marches to the barn
With buckets in his hands
Getting to work
Quickly and carefully
Milking all the cows

The mechanical man marched
He marched to the henhouse
Singing

"The chicks need some tending
They've spent the evening laying eggs
So here's some feed for your trouble
My lady needs her breakfast
I'm taking two, now don't you stew
I'll be back tomorrow to say halloo!"

Clicking and clacking
Whirring and whacking
The mechanical man
Took the eggs inside
And made breakfast
He carried it to his lady
Handing it carefully to her

Standing in the same spot he started
His clockworks slowed
As he watched her eat
Until his spring unsprung
And he sagged forward slowly
Until he looked at his feet

Awaiting the next morning
When her sweet hand would reach out
And touch his key
Starting his day all over again
